Indocin (Indomethacin) Dosage and Side Effects

INDOCIN is a prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe pain, swelling, and stiffness from arthritis.

Proper Use of this medication

A typical dose of INDOCIN for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis is 75 milligrams (mg) two or three times a day, but your doctor will try to find the lowest dose that works for you.

INDOCIN comes in regular capsules, extended-release capsules, liquid form, and suppositories.

Don't open or crush the extended-release capsules, and mix the liquid thoroughly. Take INDOCIN with food or after a meal.

Treatment for shoulder pain may continue for one or two weeks, but treatment for gout should stop as soon as pain goes away.

In 2014, the FDA approved a low-dose version of INDOCIN: 20-mg and 40-mg capsules sold under the brand name Tivorbex.

This version of the drug is made of smaller particles of INDOCIN that dissolve more quickly.

INDOCIN Overdose

An overdose of INDOCIN can cause nausea, vomiting, severe headache, dizziness, confusion, and tiredness.

Severe symptoms can include numbness, tingling, and seizure.

If you think you have taken an overdose, or if someone else may have overdosed on INDOCIN, call a poison control center..

Missed Dose of INDOCIN

Take INDOCIN exactly as directed by your doctor. Don’t take more or less.

If you miss a dose of INDOCIN, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule.

Don't double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Side Effects

Possible side effects of INDOCIN include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion and stomachache
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness
  • Depression
  • Ringing in the ears

Serious side effects can occur with INDOCIN.

If you have any of these side effects, stop taking INDOCIN and call your doctor right away. For severe side effects, get emergency help, or call 911:

  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Slurred speech
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting blood or something resembling coffee grounds
  • Bloody diarrhea or tarry stools
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Skin rash or blistering
  • Skin rash with fever
  • Fatigue, nausea, yellowing of skin or eyes, dark-colored urine, and flu-like symptoms
  • Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, or body
  • Difficulty swallowing or talking
  • Blurred vision

If you have any side effects from INDOCIN, let your doctor know.

People older than 65 are more prone to side effects of INDOCIN, including GI bleeding. If you are over 65, ask your doctor whether there are safer alternatives.

Warnings and Precautions

INDOCIN and other NSAIDs can cause heart attack and stroke.

These can occur without warning and can be fatal. This risk may increase if you take INDOCIN for a prolonged period of time.

You also may be at higher risk if you have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure. Taking INDOCIN may trigger high blood pressure or make it worse, and high blood pressure is a risk factor for stroke and heart attack.

INDOCIN and other NSAIDs may cause ulcers, perforations, and sudden bleeding in your stomach or intestine (known as gastrointestinal, or GI, bleeding).

This can occur at any time during treatment. You may be at higher risk for GI bleeding if you are elderly, drink a lot of alcohol, smoke, are in poor health, or take any blood-thinning medication.

You may also be at higher risk if you have a history of ulcers or GI bleeding.

About 1 percent of people who take INDOCIN every day for three to six months experience GI bleeding.

You should not take INDOCIN if you have asthma, nasal polyps, and an allergy to aspirin.

This triple combination -- known as ASA triad, aspirin triad, or Samter's triad -- can results in anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction.

Talk with your doctor about the warnings related to stroke, heart attack, GI bleeding, and anaphylaxis.

Tell your doctor about any history of heart disease, stroke, ulcers, or GI bleeding, including any family history of heart disease or stroke.

Ask your doctor how you will be checked for these conditions and any warning symptoms to watch for.

Use INDOCIN with caution if you have high blood pressure, heart failure, or edema (fluid retention), or if you have ever had a peptic ulcer.

You should not take INDOCIN for two weeks after having a type of heart bypass surgery called coronary artery bypass graft. Taking INDOCIN could increase your risk for stroke or heart attack after this surgery.

Before starting INDOCIN, also let your doctor know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Anemia
  • Eye disease
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Lung disease or asthma

INDOCIN and Pregnancy

INDOCIN is not safe to take during later stages of pregnancy because it may cause heart defects and other problems to a developing fetus.

Before taking INDOCIN, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. And if you become pregnant while taking INDOCIN, tell your doctor right away.

INDOCIN is also unsafe to take while breastfeeding because it can pass into breast milk.

Children 14 years old and younger should not take INDOCIN.

Interactions with this medication

Some drugs may affect the way INDOCIN works, and INDOCIN may affect other drugs you are taking.

It’s very important to let your doctor know about all drugs you take, including any other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, illegal or recreational drugs, herbal remedies, or supplements.

Types of drugs that are known to interact with INDOCIN include:

  • Over-the-counter NSAIDs including Advil, Aleve, and Motrin
  • Prescription NSAIDs, such as diflunisal (Dolobid) and naproxen (Naprosyn)
  • Aspirin
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for high blood pressure such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), and enalapril (Vasotec)
  • Beta blockers for high blood pressure, including atenolol (Tenormin), labetalol (Normodyne), and metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL)
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) for high blood pressure, such as candesartan (Atacand), eprosartan (Teveten), and irbesartan (Avapro)
  • Oral corticosteroids such as dexamethasone (Decadron, Dexone), methylprednisolone (Medrol), and prednisone (Deltasone)
  • Drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, including methotrexate (Rheumatrex)
  • Diuretics (water pills) such as triamterene (Dyrenium, in Dyazide)
  • Blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin)
  • The cardiac drug digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • The bipolar disorder drug lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • The gout treatment probenecid (Benemid)
  • The seizure medication phenytoin (Dilantin)

Other INDOCIN Interactions

INDOCIN may cause drowsiness and headache, so don’t drive or do other activities that require careful attention until you know how INDOCIN affects you.

You shouldn’t drink alcohol while taking this medication because it can worsen the side effects of INDOCIN.

Precose (Acarbose) Dosage and Side Effects

PRECOSE (acarbose) is a prescription drug used to help control blood-sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes. Acarbose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, a type of drug that helps control glucose levels by slowing your body's digestion of carbohydrates (starches and sugars) in food.

Proper Use of this medication

Take each dose with the first bite of each main meal.

Try to take PRECOSE at the same time each day to help you remember your doses.

Your dosage will be based on your medical condition, weight, and response to treatment.

Your doctor will probably start you on a lower dose of the drug and gradually increase it.

You will probably monitor your blood-sugar levels after meals and share the information with your doctor to decide on dosage changes.

The aim is to find the lowest effective dose with the fewest side effects.

Only people who weigh more than 132 pounds (60 kilograms) should take more than 50 milligrams (mg) per meal (150 mg per day).

The manufacturer recommends that no one exceed more than 300 milligrams (mg) per day of PRECOSE.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully when taking this medicine. Don't take more of the drug than is prescribed.

PRECOSE Overdose

If you suspect an overdose, you should contact a poison-control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose of PRECOSE

If you miss a dose of PRECOSE, take it as soon as you remember.

If you plan on having a snack soon, take your dose with the snack.

If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular dosing schedule. Don't double up on doses.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects of PRECOSE

Tell your doctor if any of the following side effects become severe or don't go away:

  • Mild stomach pain, gas, or bloating
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Mild itching or skin rash

Serious Side Effects of PRECOSE

Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, which include hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Severe itching
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Severe constipation
  • Diarrhea that's watery or bloody
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Easy bruising
  • Purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin
  • Upper stomach pain, nausea, or loss of appetite
  • Dark urine or clay-colored stools

  • Any kind of stomach or digestion problem
  • Ketoacidosis, a serious condition that occurs after an untreated high-blood-sugar (hyperglycemic) episode

Tell your healthcare provider that you're taking PRECOSE before having any type of surgery, including a dental procedure.

Regular sugar (sucrose) won't work if you use it to treat a low blood-sugar episode while taking PRECOSE.

In case you need to treat mild or moderate low blood sugar, be sure you always have an oral glucose (dextrose) tablet to take by mouth.

You should know the symptoms of a high (hyperglycemic) and low (hypoglycemic) blood-sugar episodes and what to do if you experience them.

Taken alone, PRECOSE is not expected to trigger a low blood-sugar event, but it might if taken with some other drugs.

Tell your physician if you experience illnesses, fevers, injuries, or unusual stress while taking PRECOSE, because these kinds of events can change your blood-sugar levels and may affect the dosage you need.

Avoid taking a digestive enzyme that can make it harder for your body to absorb PRECOSE, such as pancreatin, amylase, or lipase. Some of the products that contain these enzymes are:

  • Arco-Lase
  • Cotazym
  • Donnazyme
  • Pancrease
  • Creon
  • Ku-Zyme

Continue to take this medicine even if you feel well. Don't stop taking PRECOSE without first talking to your doctor.

Your physician will probably want to check your glucose levels often while you are on the drug. Keep all appointments with your healthcare provider and laboratory for tests.

Always wear a diabetic identification (ID) bracelet to be sure you get proper treatment in case of an emergency.

Pregnancy and PRECOSE

PRECOSE is an FDA Pregnancy Category B drug, which means it's not expected to harm an unborn baby.

However, there have not been adequate studies of PRECOSE in pregnant women, so you shouldn't take it unless you definitely need to.

You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

It's not known whether PRECOSE passes into breast milk or could harm a breastfeeding baby.

You shouldn't breastfeed while taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor.

PRECOSE and Weight Loss

PRECOSE may help people with diabetes lose weight, though the results of studies have been mixed.

The medication in Incruse Ellipta is an inhaled anticholinergic. It binds to muscarinic receptors on the smooth muscle in the airways, causing those muscles to relax. If Incruse Ellipta is used every day, it decreases the severity of COPD symptoms.

Dosage

Incruse Ellipta contains 62.5 mcg of umeclidinium.

Inhale the contents of one foil blister strip once daily.

Side Effects

Side effects are relatively uncommon when taking Incruse Ellipta. About 2 in 100 people may experience one of the following side effects:

  • Bruising areas of the skin
  • Cough
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • Stomach pain
  • Stuffy/runny nose
  • Tooth pain
  • Upper respiratory infection

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a side effect that worsens your COPD or makes it hard to take your medication.

Precautions

Do not use Incruse Ellipta if you have a milk allergy because the inhalation powder contains whey proteins.

Incruse Ellipta cannot treat bronchospasm. It should not be used in people whose COPD is acutely deteriorating.

Use caution if you have a history of narrow-angle glaucoma because Incruse Ellipta can worsen the condition in certain people.

People with a history of urinary retention may see their symptoms worsen while taking this medication, but this is rare because not a lot of the drug absorbs into the bloodstream. Use caution if you have a history of prostatic hyperplasia or bladder neck obstruction.

If it becomes harder to breathe while using this inhaler, stop taking it and call your doctor.

Interactions

Common drug-drug interactions with Incruse Ellipta include:

  • Aclidinium
  • Anticholinergic agents
  • Glycopyrrolate
  • Ipratropium
  • Loxapine
  • Potassium Chloride

Storage

Store at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F.

Pharmacist Tips

  • Incruse Ellipta does not relieve acute symptoms. You should have another prescription for a short-acting inhaler like albuterol to manage acute breathing problems.
  • Take Incruse Ellipta every day to see the full effect. It should be inhaled by mouth once daily. It may take a few weeks of continuous use to notice a difference.
  • Store Incruse Ellipta away from heat and sources of moisture like the bathroom or kitchen.

Pred Mild (Prednisolone Acetate) Dosage and Side Effects

PRED MILD ophthalmic (for the eyes) is used to treat eye swelling caused by allergy, infection, injury, surgery, or other conditions.

Proper Use of this medication

Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.

Wash your hands before using PRED MILD ophthalmic.

To apply the eye drops:

  • Shake the bottle gently before each use to be sure the medicine is well mixed.
  • Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye with the dropper tip down. Look up and away from the dropper as you squeeze out a drop, then close your eye.
  • Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye (near your nose) for about 1 minute to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct. If you use more than one drop in the same eye, wait about 5 minutes before putting in the next drop.
  • Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not allow the dropper tip to touch any surface, including the eyes or hands. If the dropper becomes contaminated it could cause an infection in your eye, which can lead to vision loss or serious damage to the eye.

If you still have pain or swelling after 2 days of treatment, stop using this medication and call your doctor.

Do not stop using PRED MILD ophthalmic suddenly after long-term use without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

If you use PRED MILD ophthalmic for longer than 10 days, your eyes will need to be checked on a regular basis. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle or tube tightly capped. Do not allow this medicine to freeze.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

An overdose of PRED MILD ophthalmic is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms.

Use the medication as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
