What is Diovan used for?
Diovan or Valsartan is an oral drug for curing congestive heart failure and hypertension. It is among the most prevalent ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers). Valsartan is also prescribed to patients who develop heart failure soon after having a heart attack. It is known to keep victims of congestive heart failure stable and out of the hospital.
Diovan works by blocking the angiotensin receptor. Angiotensin is a strong chemical that attaches itself to angiotensin receptors found on the soft muscle cells of our blood vessels and other body tissues. As a result of this attachment, the blood vessels begin to vasoconstrict or become narrower. This causes hypertension or high blood pressure. Once taken, Diovan dilates blood vessels, causing blood pressure to reduce.
How is Diovan dosage taken?
If Valsartan is being used to treat congestive heart failure, the normal dosage is 40mg two times a day. However, your doctor may increase your doses to anywhere between 80mg to 160mg. After having a heart attack, you will need to take 20mg twice a day. If you tolerate your small dosages without side effects, your physician might increase your dose to 160mg two times daily. Incase you are taking Diovan to cure high blood pressure; your first dosage may range from 80mg to 160mg once a day. Utmost, you should only take 320mg per day and expect your blood pressure to reduce within a month.
The most important thing to remember is to take Diovan exactly as instructed by your doctor. If they change your dose, recall doing the same. You should take Diovan on an empty or a full stomach. Incase it is your child who is taking this drug and is unable to swallow the whole capsule, have it turned into a liquid by your doctor or pharmacist. Then shake the liquid well prior to measuring an accurate dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can recall. However, skip the missed dose if you are almost taking your next one. Avoid swallowing two doses at once as this will be an overdose. If you accidentally swallow more than needed, go to the emergency room immediately.
What are the side effects of Diovan?
Diovan is a well tolerated drug. Even so, there are some users who will experience its most prevalent side effects. These include the following:
- Flu-like symptoms such as cough and headache

Common side effects are tolerable and will go away on their own. If you experience severe side effects, such as flutters in your chest or shortness of breath, give your doctor a call immediately.
