Zymar Eye Drops (Gatifloxacin) Dosage and Side Effects

ZYMAR is an antibiotic eye drop used to treat bacterial eye infections. ZYMAR kills many kinds of bacteria that can cause infections of the eye and is ineffective against viruses.

Warnings and Precautions

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • eye swelling, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (may be signs of a new infection); or
  • any new or worsening eye problems.

Common side effects may include:

  • mild itching, burning, redness, or irritation;
  • watery eyes; or
  • puffy eyelids.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Interactions with this medication

You should not wear contact lenses while you still have active symptoms of an eye infection.

Do not use other eye medications during treatment with ZYMAR unless your doctor tells you to.

It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on ZYMAR used in the eyes. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Proper Use of this medication

  • ZYMAR was prescribed by your doctor to treat your specific medical problem and is for your use only. Do not share it with others.

  • The usual dose of ZYMAR is: On days 1 and 2, instill one drop every two hours in the affected eye(s) while awake, up to 8 times daily. On days 3 to 7, instill one drop four times daily while awake. Doses should be evenly spaced throughout the day.

  • Your doctor may have told you to use ZYMAR in a different way to that recommended in this leaflet. If so, follow your doctor's instructions about when and how to use the eye drops. Read the directions on your prescription label carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain anything that you do not understand.

  • Do not wear contact lenses when you are suffering bacterial conjunctivitis.

  • Do not change the dosage of the drug without consulting your physician. If you stop treatment contact your physician immediately.

  • Do not start taking any other ophthalmic medicines unless you have discussed the matter with your physician.

  • If you develop any eye irritation or any new eye problems such as dryness of the eye, swelling or redness of the eyelid, tearing, or decreased vision, contact your physician immediately.

  • If you suspect that ZYMAR is causing an allergic reaction, i.e. itchy skin or increased inflammation, stop its use and contact your physician as soon as possible.

  • You must not use the bottle if the tamper-proof seal on the bottle neck is broken before you first use it.

  • Follow the following steps to help you use ZYMAR properly:

    1. Wash your hands. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.

    2. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.

    3. Turn the bottle upside down and squeeze it gently to release one drop into each eye that needs treatment.

    4. Let go of the lower lid, and close your eye for 30 seconds.

If a drop misses your eye, try again.

To help prevent infections, do not let the tip of the bottle touch your eye or anything else. Put the cap back on and close the bottle immediately after you have used it.

Missed Doses:

  • If you forget to apply your eye drops at your normal time, simply apply them as soon as you remember. Then go back to the original schedule as directed by your doctor. Don't try to catch up on missed drops by applying more than one dose at a time.

Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Medication Information

Uses

Flovent is prescribed to treat the inflammatory lung diseases asthma. People with this condition have trouble breathing because their airways tighten.

Certain triggers like exercise or smoke can trigger bronchospasm (also known as an asthma attack). When an attack begins, symptoms may include coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing, rapid and frequent breathing, throat irritation, and chest pressure.

Bronchospasm can last anywhere from minutes to hours to days. Sometimes they go away on their own, but they sometimes need treatment.

Flovent does not treat bronchospasm, but it makes them less likely to happen. Flovent contains the corticosteroid fluticasone propionate, which is an anti-inflammatory medication. Fluticasone works by inactivating the immune response that leads to inflammation and constriction of the airways.

Dosage

Flovent is an inhaler that comes in three different dose sizes, including 44 mcg, 110 mcg, and 220 mcg.

The standard dose is one to two inhalations by mouth twice daily. The dose ranges from 88 mcg to 880 mcg per day, depending on what the doctor prescribes.

Rinse your mouth with water after each administration and spit the water into the sink without swallowing. Failing to rinse the mouth after using Flovent can cause an infection of the mouth called thrush.

Shake well before each use.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Flovent inhaler include:

  • Bronchitis
  • Candidiasis
  • Cough
  • Dysphonia
  • Headache
  • Inflammation
  • Sinusitis
  • Throat irritation
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

Precautions

If you have a long-term infection, including bacterial, viral, or parasitic infection, tell your doctor before starting Flovent because it can worsen the infection.

Children who take Flovent long-term should have their growth monitored.

Glaucoma and cataracts can develop in people who take Flovent for long periods.

  • Remove the canister from the mouthpiece and rinse the mouthpiece with warm water once per week. This prevents it from becoming clogged.

Xopenex (Levalbuterol) Dosage and Side Effects

XOPENEX is used to treat people with lung diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The inhaled medicine - manufactured for use in a nebulizer, or inhaler - can prevent or relieve wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

Warnings and Precautions

You should tell your doctor if you're allergic to levalbuterol, albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin, and others), or any other medications before taking XOPENEX.

This medicine controls symptoms of asthma and other lung diseases, but it isn't a cure. You should continue to use XOPENEX even if you feel well. Don't stop taking this drug or any other medications without first talking to your doctor.

XOPENEX can cause wheezing and breathing difficulties immediately after it's inhaled. This is more likely to occur the first time you use a new canister. Call your doctor right away if this happens to you.

You should also call your doctor immediately if your symptoms become worse, the drug becomes less effective, or you require more doses of medication than is usually needed for relief.

Before taking XOPENEX, tell your doctor if you have or have ever had:

  • High blood pressure
  • An irregular heartbeat
  • Any type of heart disease
  • Seizures
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease

A XOPENEX inhaler shouldn't be given to a child younger than 4 years old. XOPENEX solution (taken via a nebulizer) shouldn't be given to a child younger than 6 years old.

Pregnancy and XOPENEX

XOPENEX is a Pregnancy Category C drug, which means harm to an unborn baby cannot be ruled out. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking this medicine.

It's also not known whether XOPENEX will affect a breastfeeding baby. You shouldn't breastfeed while using this drug without first talking to your doctor.

Proper Use of this medication

XOPENEX comes as a solution to inhale by mouth using a nebulizer (a machine that turns medication into an inhalable mist), a concentrated solution to mix with saline and inhale with a nebulizer, or as an aerosol to take using an inhaler.

The solution for oral inhalation is typically used 3 or 4 times a day, once every 6 to 8 hours. The aerosol inhaler is typically used every 4 to 6 hours.

You should follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully when taking this medicine. Don't take more or less of the drug than your doctor prescribes.

Don't use the aerosol inhaler when you are near a heat source. It can explode if exposed to very high temperatures. Also, don't inhale any other medication out of your inhaler canister.

You should read the written instructions on your aerosol inhaler or nebulizer before using either device. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to use it.

Clean your nebulizer or inhaler regularly. Follow the manufacturer's directions, and ask your doctor if you have any questions.

XOPENEX Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose include severe forms of some of the side effects listed above.

If you suspect an overdose, you should contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose of XOPENEX
