Manufactured by Lundbeck, Trintellix is offered in these dosages: 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. The active medicinal ingredient is called vortioxetine.
What is Trintellix used for?
Trintellix is an oral drug that is designed for those who suffer from a major depressive disorder (MDD). It is an antidepressant that works by affecting brain chemicals that could be disturbed. Made for adults, Trintellix can also be prescribed for other health problems.
If you have a major depressive disorder you can take Trintellix. However, it’s best to take it just as instructed by your healthcare professional.
The initial dose should be 10mg and should be taken orally one time per day. After that there will be a maintenance dose of 5 to 20mg one time per day. You can only take 20mg per day, maximum. This drug takes six to eight weeks to deliver anticipated results, according to trial studies.
If one is treating an acute case of depression, it is advisable to continue taking their maintenance dose for several months. This is a recommended way to avoid recurrence of disease symptoms.
If your doctor alters your current dosage, make sure you follow the new instructions. You can take this medication with or without food. Another point to keep in mind is that vortioxetine should not be stopped suddenly. It is likely to cause bad withdrawal symptoms when discontinued abruptly.
If you wish to stop, do so under the guidance of your doctor. In case you forget to take one dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, ignore the skipped dose if you are about to take your next scheduled dose. If you take more than required, go to the emergency room immediately.
If you have been prescribed to take Trintellix for your depression, take note of the following side effects:
- Interrupted vision
- Loss of libido, sexual dysfunction or inability to reach an orgasm
- Occasional vomiting
If you show signs of an allergic reaction, call your doctor right away. If any of these common side effects worsen, call your physician the soonest possible.
Consider these precautions to be on the safer side:
- Avoid this antidepressant drug if you have taken a MAO inhibitor in the last two weeks.
- If your mind is occupied by suicidal thoughts after taking Trintellix, report this to your health care provider. Look for signs such as panic attacks, insomnia, mood swings, hostility, irritability or restlessness.
- Trintellix is designed for adults only. Anyone below eighteen years should not take it unless their doctor permits it.
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to vortioxetine, the key ingredient.
- Inform your healthcare expert about having a liver disease, seizures, bipolar disorder, a blood clotting disorder, a history of abusing drugs, low sodium levels or glaucoma (narrow-angle).
