Travatan Z (Travoprost) Medication Information

Uses

Travatan Z is a prescription medication for the eye that can treat conditions where the fluid pressure of the eye is too high. Travatan Z is approved to treat high intraocular pressure in ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma.

When the fluid pressure of the eye is too high, it puts pressure on the optic nerve. Symptoms may include seeing halos, blurred vision, eye pain, headache, nausea and vomiting, and eye redness. If left untreated, increased intraocular pressure can lead to loss of vision and permanent blindness.

Travatan Z is a prostaglandin analog that activates receptors on the surface of eye cells. Activating prostaglandin receptors increases the amount of fluid the flows out of the eye, reducing pressure.

Dosage

Travatan Z can be used in one or both eyes, depending on which eye(s) are affected.

The regular dose is one drop into the affected eye every evening.

When applying Travatan Z, do not touch the tip of the applicator to the applicator.

Wait 15 minutes after applying Travatan Z before inserting contact lenses.

Wait 5 minutes after applying Travatan Z before using other eye drops.

Side Effects

Only a small amount of Travatan is absorbed into the eye, so most of the side effects are localized to the eye. Common side effects may include:

  • Blepharitis
  • Blurred vision
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Corneal staining
  • Crusting of the eyelid
  • Decreased visual acuity
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Dyspepsia
  • Eye discomfort
  • Eye pain
  • Eye pruritus
  • Foreign body sensation of the eye
  • Headache
  • Hyperpigmentation of the eyelashes
  • Increased growth of the eyelashes
  • Keratitis
  • Lacrimation
  • Ocular hyperemia
  • Ophthalmic inflammation
  • Photophobia
  • Subconjunctival hemorrhage
  • Visual disturbance

Precautions

Travatan Z and similar eye medications can cause a permanent pigment change of the eye to a darker color. The risk is higher for people with light-colored eyes. Pigment change from Travatan Z is usually permanent.

Travatan Z can also change the length of upper and lower eyelashes. The eyelashes may change length and thickness. This effect is usually reversible, and eyelashes return to normal after stopping the medication.

Interactions

Common drug-drug interactions with Travatan Z may include:

  • Aspirin
  • Bromfenac
  • Diclofenac
  • Ibuprofen
  • Indomethacin
  • Ketorolac
  • Naproxen
  • Nepafenac
  • Piroxicam

Storage

Store the bottle of Travatan Z either in the refrigerator or at room temperature,  2°C - 25°C (36°F - 77°F).

Pharmacist Tips

  • Gently warm the bottle between your hands to bring it to body temperature before use.
  • Do not touch the tip of the applicator to your eyeball or surrounding tissue.
  • Travatan Z can be kept in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Proper Use of this medication

The brand Tricor is available in strengths of 54 milligrams (mg) and 160 mg. Generic fenofibrate is available in 48 mg and 154 mg tablets. You should not take more than the highest dose prescribed by your doctor in one day.

Always take TRICOR with a full glass of water regardless of whether you eat. Eating may delay TRICOR’s effect.

TRICOR Overdose

If you suspect an overdose, you should contact a poison-control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose of TRICOR

If you miss a dose of TRICOR, try to take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of the medication at the same time.

If you miss a dose of ENTOCORT EC, try to take it as soon as you remember.

If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time.

Multaq (Dronedarone) Medication Information

Uses

Multaq is a prescription medication used in people with a history of abnormal heart rhythms. It can be prescribed for people who used to have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter but now have a normal heart rhythm. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart problems.

In people with a heart arrhythmia, the cells that set the “pace” of heartbeats are not firing correctly. They might fire at incorrect times, or some heart chambers fire out of sync with the other heart chambers. Arrhythmias, if not treated, can lead to cardiac arrest and serious blood clots. Once an abnormal heart rhythm is corrected, Multaq can be used to maintain the normal rhythm.

Multaq works by blocking electrical signals that move through the heart tissue. Blocking these signals helps to maintain a normal heart rhythm.

Dosage

The usual dose of Multaq is 400 mg by mouth twice daily. Multaq should be taken with breakfast and dinner.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Multaq may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Allergic dermatitis
  • Bradycardia
  • Dermatitis
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspepsia
  • Eczema
  • Increased serum creatinine
  • Nausea
  • Prolonged QT interval
  • Pruritus
  • Skin rash
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver problems before starting Multaq.

Multaq FAQs

How will I know if Multaq is working?

It's difficult to notice the effects of Multaq on your own since it works by stabilizing your heart rhythm over time. Your doctor will monitor your heart function regularly through tests like an electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart rhythm assessments. It's essential to continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if you feel fine, to avoid any recurrence of abnormal heart rhythms.

Do I need to take Multaq with food?

Yes, Multaq should be taken with food for better absorption and effectiveness. It is recommended that you take Multaq with your breakfast and dinner. By following this guideline, you can maximize the drug's ability to stabilize your heart rhythm and manage the condition effectively.

How long do I need to take Multaq?

Multaq is typically a long-term medication. Your doctor will determine how long you should take it based on your health status and response to the treatment. Most patients are prescribed Multaq for life, especially if they have had previous issues with atrial fibrillation or other heart rhythm disorders. Always follow your doctor's guidance for the duration of treatment.

Are There Any Serious Side Effects of Multaq?

Like any medication, Multaq can cause side effects. Some people may experience mild side effects like nausea, abdominal pain, or a skin rash. However, more serious side effects like bradycardia (slow heart rate) or prolonged QT interval are rare but possible. If you notice any concerning symptoms or changes in your health, consult your doctor immediately.

Can I Take Multaq With Other Medications?

Multaq may interact with several other medications, so it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider of all the medications you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Certain combinations, like with amlodipine or grapefruit juice, can affect how Multaq works and increase the risk of serious side effects.

Vaniqa (Eflornithine) Medication Information

Uses

Vaniqa (eflornithine) is a prescription cream used to treat unwanted facial hair in women, for areas on the face and under the chin only.  It may be prescribed alone or in combination with other hair-removal treatments.

Hirsutism is the medical term for unwanted facial hair, and it affects 22% of women in North America.  Hirsutism ranges from fine to coarse dark hair on the mustache and chin area.

Hirsutism has many possible causes, such as:

  • high levels of male hormones (androgens)
  • polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • hormone problems
  • certain medications
  • in rare cases, cancer of the adrenal glands or ovary
  • often runs in families

Women affected by unwanted facial hair may sometimes feel the need to remove hair as often as 2 to 3 times per week.  A variety of hair-removal techniques are available such as plucking, waxing, depilatories, bleaching, shaving, electrolysis, laser, and intense pulsed light (IPL).

Vaniqa is not a hair removal product.  Vaniqa is the only approved prescription skin cream that can slow the rate of facial hair growth.

Dosage

Vaniqa comes in a 13.9% cream.

Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected areas of the face and under the chin twice daily, or as directed by your doctor.  Rub in completely.

Don’t wash your face for at least 4 hours after applying Vaniqa.

Precautions

Vaniqa is for external use only, and should only be applied to areas of the face and chin.

It isn’t known if Vaniqa is safe for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Side Effects

Like all prescription products, Vaniqa has possible side effects.  In clinical studies of Vaniqa, the most common side effect was acne, which occurred in 10 to 21% of people.

Other less frequent side effects may include:

  • Stinging or burning
  • Dry Skin
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

For more information about the side effects of Vaniqa, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

Vaniqa has no known drug interactions.

However, wait until Vaniqa cream has dried before applying other products like sunscreen or cosmetics.

Storage

Store Vaniqa at room temperature (25℃/77℉).

Pharmacists Tips

  • Vaniqa slows hair growth to improve the appearance of unwanted facial hair.  Vaniqa does not work to remove hair.
  • You can continue using other hair removal techniques with Vaniqa; however, wait at least 5 minutes after hair removal to apply Vaniqa.
  • If your skin becomes irritated, apply Vaniqa less often (once a day instead of twice a day) until the irritation goes away.

Vaniqa FAQs

How does Vaniqa work?

Enzymes in the hair follicles promote hair growth.  Vaniqa blocks a specific enzyme, leading to slower hair growth.  Vaniqa does not remove or permanently stop hair growth.  You will still need to continue your current hair removal treatment, but you may be able to do it less often.

How fast will Vaniqa work?

Some people notice an improvement within 4 to 8 weeks after starting Vaniqa.  For others, it may take longer.  If no improvement is seen within 6 months, talk with your doctor about whether treatment should be stopped.

Will the effects of Vaniqa be permanent?

No, Vaniqa does not permanently slow hair growth.  Hair in the treated area will return to its pre-treatment rate of hair growth about 8 weeks after stopping Vaniqa treatment.

Vaseretic (Enalapril/HCTZ) Dosage and Side Effects

VASERETIC lowers blood pressure. VASERETIC contains a combination of 2 drugs, enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide. Enalapril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic, or a “water pill” that increases urination. This lowers blood pressure.

Warnings and Precautions

Serious Warning and Precautions—Pregnancy

VASERETIC should not be used during pregnancy. If you discover that you are pregnant while taking VASERETIC, stop the medication and contact your doctor, nurse or pharmacist as soon as possible.

BEFORE you use VASERETIC talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist if you:

  • Are allergic to any drug used to lower blood pressure or penicillin.
  • Have bronchial asthma.
  • Are taking a medicine that contains aliskiren, such as RASILEZ, used to lower high blood pressure. The combination withVASERETIC is not recommended.
  • Are taking an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). You can recognize an ARB because its medicinal ingredient ends in “-SARTAN”.
  • Are taking anti-cancer (temsirolimus, everolimus) or anti-rejection (sirolimus) medications. Use of ACE inhibitors, such asVASERETIC, with these drugs may increase the chance of having an allergic reaction (angioedema).
  • Have recently received or are planning to get allergy shots for bee or wasp stings.
  • Have narrowing of an artery or a heart valve.
  • Have had a heart attack or stroke.
  • Have heart failure.
  • Have diabetes, liver or kidney disease.
  • Have lupus or gout.
  • Are on dialysis.
  • Are dehydrated or suffer from excessive vomiting, diarrhea, or sweating.
  • Are taking a salt substitute that contains potassium, potassium supplements, or a potassium-sparing diuretic (a specific kind of “water pill”).
  • Are on a low-salt diet.
  • Are receiving gold (sodium aurothiomalate) injections.
  • Are less than 18 years old.

Hydrochlorothiazide in VASERETIC can cause Sudden Eye Disorders:

  • Myopia: sudden nearsightedness or blurred vision.
  • Glaucoma: an increased pressure in your eyes, eye pain. Untreated, it may lead to permanent vision loss.

These eye disorders are related and can develop within hours to weeks of starting VASERETIC.

You may become sensitive to the sun while taking VASERETIC. Exposure to sunlight should be minimized until you know how you respond.

If you are going to have surgery and will be given an anesthetic, be sure to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking VASERETIC.

Driving and using machines: Before you perform tasks which may require special attention, wait until you know how you respond to VASERETIC. Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting can especially occur after the first dose and when the dose is increased.

Side Effects

Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness, fatigue, weakness
  • Cough
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain, upset stomach, decreased appetite, constipation
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • Impotence
  • Tingling of the skin

If any of these affects you severely, tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

VASERETIC can cause abnormal blood test results. Your doctor will decide when to perform blood tests and will interpret the results.

Interactions with this medication

As with most medicines, interactions with other drugs are possible. Tell your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about all the medicines you take, including drugs prescribed by other doctors, vitamins, minerals, natural supplements, or alternative medicines.

The following may interact with VASERETIC:

  • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) used to treat West Syndrome.
  • Alcohol, barbiturates (sleeping pills), or narcotics (strong pain medications). They may cause low blood pressure and dizziness when you go from lying or sitting to standing up.
  • Amphotericin B, an antifungal drug.
  • Anticancer drugs, including cyclophosphamide and methotrexate.
  • Antidepressants, in particular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including citalopram, escitalopram, and sertraline.
  • Antidiabetic drugs, including insulin and oral medicines.
  • Bile acid resins used to lower cholesterol.
  • Calcium or vitamin D supplements.
  • Corticosteroids used to treat joint pain and swelling.
  • Digoxin, a heart medication.
  • Diuretics or “water pills.”
  • Drugs that slow down or speed up bowel function, including atropine, metoclopramide, and domperidone.
  • Drugs used to treat epilepsy, including carbamazepine and topiramate.
  • Blood pressure-lowering drugs, including diuretics (“water pills”), aliskiren-containing products (e.g. RASILEZ), or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).
  • Gout medications (allopurinol, uricosurics, xanthine oxidase inhibitors).
  • Lithium used to treat bipolar disease.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), used to reduce pain and swelling. Examples include ibuprofen, naproxen, and celecoxib.
  • Other blood pressure lowering drugs. When taken in combination with VASERETIC, they may cause excessively low blood pressure.
  • Potassium-containing medicines, potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, as these may lead to increased levels of potassium in the blood which can be serious. In these cases, your physician may need to adjust the dosage of VASERETIC or monitor your blood level of potassium.
  • Certain pain and arthritis medicines, including gold therapy.
  • Skeletal muscle relaxants used to relieve muscle spasms, including tubocurare.
  • mTOR inhibitor (e.g., temsirolimus, sirolimus, everolimus) therapy. Taking these drugs together could increase the risk for an allergic reaction called angioedema.

Proper Use of this medication

VASERETIC is not for initial therapy. You must first be stabilized on the individual components (enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide) of VASERETIC. If your dosage matches the dosages in VASERETIC, your doctor may prescribe VASERETIC taken once a day (instead of each component as a separate pill).

Take VASERETIC exactly as prescribed. It is recommended to take your dose at about the same time every day.

VASERETIC can be taken with or without food. If VASERETIC causes upset stomach, take it with food or milk.

Usual adult dose:

The maximum daily dosage should not exceed two tablets of VASERETIC 10 mg/25 mg.

Overdose:

If you think you have taken too much VASERETIC contact your doctor, nurse, pharmacist, hospital emergency department or regional Poison control Centre immediately, even if there are no symptoms.

Missed dose:

If you have forgotten to take your dose during the day, carry on with the next one at the usual time. Do not double dose.

GABITRIL is used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures in adults and children who are at least 12 years old.

Warnings and Precautions

Call your doctor at once if you have new or worsening seizures.

Do not stop using GABITRIL suddenly. Stopping suddenly may cause increased seizures.

You should not use GABITRIL if you are allergic to it.

Tell your doctor about all other seizure medications you currently use. The safest dose of GABITRIL may depend what other medicines you take in combination with it.

New seizures have occurred in some people who are not epileptic who take medicine for partial seizures.

To make sure GABITRIL is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy;
  • a history of a seizure that did not stop (also called status epilepticus);
  • liver disease;
  • a history of abnormal brain wave test (EEG); or
  • a history of depression, mood disorder, or suicidal thoughts or actions.

Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking seizure medication. Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.

Follow your doctor's instructions about taking seizure medication if you are pregnant. Do not start or stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice, and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. GABITRIL may cause harm to an unborn baby, but having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both mother and baby. The benefit of preventing seizures may outweigh any risks to the baby.

If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry. This is to track the outcome of the pregnancy and to evaluate any effects of GABITRIL on the baby.

GABITRIL can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

GABITRIL should not be given to a child younger than 12 years old.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; fever; swollen glands; painful sores in or around your eyes or mouth; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

New seizures have occurred in some people who are not epileptic who take medicine for partial seizures. Call your doctor at once if you have new or worsening seizures.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • new or worsened seizures;
  • confusion, extreme weakness;
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
  • vision problems; or
  • severe skin reaction--fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

Common side effects may include:

  • tiredness, lack of energy;
  • dizziness, drowsiness;
  • nausea, stomach pain;
  • feeling nervous or irritable;
  • tremors; or
  • trouble concentrating.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Interactions with this medication

This medicine may cause blurred vision and may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly.

Drinking alcohol with this medicine can cause side effects.

Taking this medicine with other drugs that make you sleepy can worsen this effect. Ask your doctor before taking GABITRIL with a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

  • medicine to treat a psychiatric disorder;
  • diet pills, stimulants, or ADHD medication;
  • narcotic medicine; or
  • other seizure medicines--carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, valproate.

This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with GABITRIL, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed in this medication guide.
