Lumigan Eye Drops (Bimatoprost) are eye drops given to patients to help reduce high pressure in the eyes. In particular, it helps in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
There is cycle of liquid being drained from the eye and new liquid produced to replace the drained liquid. When the liquid is not draining quick enough then the pressure in the eyes increases. Lumigan (Bimatoprost) Medication Information
Lumigan is an eye medication used to treat conditions where the intraocular pressure is too high. It is indicated to treat ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma.
Increased intraocular pressure is a serious condition with symptoms including blurred vision, severe head and eye pain, nausea, vomiting, the appearance of rainbow circles around bright lights, and sudden loss of sight. Left untreated, high intraocular pressure can lead to permanent vision loss.
Lumigan is a prostaglandin analog, which is a signal molecule used by various cells of the body. Lumigan reduces intraocular pressure by increasing the amount of outgoing fluid. With regular use, Lumigan reduces the risk of optic nerve damage and vision loss.
The usual dosage of Lumigan is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Your doctor may prescribe a different dose. Take Lumigan exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Common side effects of Lumigan may include:
- Anterior chamber inflammation
- Blurred vision
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Corneal erosion
- Dry eye syndrome
- Erythema of the eyelid
- Eye discomfort
- Eye irritation
- Eye pain
- Foreign body sensation in the eye
- Iris hyperpigmentation
Lumigan can change the color of the iris for some people with light-colored eyes. It can also darken the eyelids and eyelashes. Pigmentation is often permanent.
Lumigan may lengthen and thicken the eyelashes. This effect is reversible and goes away after the medication is discontinued.
Lumigan should not be used by patients younger than 16 years of age.
Do not touch the tip of the container to the tissue of the eye. Doing so may contaminate the contents of the bottle and lead to eye infections and loss of vision.
Eye medications have a low number of drug-drug interactions because a small amount is absorbed into the bloodstream. However, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any of the following medications:
