    What is Namenda used for?

Namenda or memantine hydrochloride is a medicine for treating mild to serious dementia. It is only used to treat dementia that is triggered by Alzheimer’s disease. Grouped as an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist, Namenda binds to the NMDA receptor and prevents extreme and abnormal activity by glutamate.  It is the only medicine for treating Alzheimer’s that works in this manner.

    How is Namenda dosage taken?

The first adult dose for treating dementia of the Alzheimer’s type is 5mg one time per day. Once your body starts to tolerate this dosage, you can increase it by 5mg each week. Hence, your maintenance dosage will be 5mg to 10mg two times per day. The maximum dose you can take per day is 20mg.

Regarding how to safely take Namenda, you should aim at following your doctor’s instructions. Hence, take just the right dose rather than a smaller or a larger one than what was prescribed. You can choose to eat or not to eat when taking Namenda. Swallow the tablet whole, do not chew the dose.

What are the side effects of Memantine?

Like other medicines for treating Alzheimer’s, Namenda can cause some side effects. The common ones include:

    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Diarrhea
    • Constipation
    • Confusion

It is not mandatory to suffer from the above-mentioned side effects. If they occur, however, you will most likely tolerate them. On the other hand, if they become extremely serious, we would suggest having them checked by your doctor.

What are the precautions of taking Memantine?

If your doctor plans to prescribe Namenda for your Alzheimer’s, then it will be important to tell them the following:

    • Whether you have liver disease
    • If you are pregnant or planning to conceive soon
    • If you are breastfeeding a child
    • If you are taking any medicines and if so, mention their names to help the doctor decide whether they are safe to take with Namanda.
