    What is Aricept used for?

Aricept , or generic Donepezil is designed to improve how your brain’s nerve cells work. It stops a chemical called Acetylcholine from being broken down.  As this chemical is present in lower levels in patients who have dementia related Alzheimer's, their ability to think and reason is affected. Aricept is therefore administered to improve mild, moderate or severe symptoms. Unfortunately, it is not a cure for Alzheimer’s, and  the disease will be present even as you take Donepezil.

If you suffer with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, the normal dose is usually 5mg once per day, before you go to bed.  Your maintenance dosage will be 10mg taken orally once per day, however, you should be on the initial dose of 5mg for four to six weeks.

If dealing with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, you will require larger starting and maintenance doses. You may be taking 10mg once per day for three months or longer, and then start taking up to 23mg once per day as your maintenance dosage.  Even though the above-mentioned dosages are the standard ones, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions . You should not chew, crush or break your tablets; swallow it whole. You can safely take Aricept with or without food.
