Glyxambi (Empagliflozin and Linagliptin) Medication Information

Uses

Glyxambi is a prescription medication for type 2 diabetes that contains two medicines in one tablet.  Glyxambi contains empagliflozin (Jardiance) and linagliptin (Tradjenta). 

Glyxambi is used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with a healthy diet and exercise.  Glyxambi can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular death (heart attack or stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease.

In type 2 diabetes, your blood sugar (glucose) becomes too high.  Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps sugar get into your cells. If your body doesn’t make enough insulin or use it properly, too much sugar stays in your blood.

Over time, high blood sugar can lead to many health problems and increase your heart attack or stroke risk. 

The good news is that you can prevent type 2 diabetes from getting worse.  You can take control of your diabetes by choosing a healthy diet, exercising, and taking prescription medications such as Glyxambi.

Dosage

Glyxambi (empagliflozin/linagliptin) tablets are available in two strengths: 10 mg/5 mg and 25 mg/5 mg.

The recommended starting dose of Glyxambi is 10 mg empagliflozin/5 mg linagliptin once daily.  Your doctor may increase your dose to 25 mg empagliflozin/5mg linagliptin once daily.

Precautions

Glyxambi may not be safe for people with the following medical history or conditions:

• Pancreatitis or other pancreas problems
• Kidney or liver disease
• Urinary tract, vagina, or penis infections
• Alcoholism 
• Pregnant or plan to become pregnant
• Breastfeeding
• Type 1 diabetes
• History of an allergic reaction to Glyxambi, empagliflozin (Jardiance), or linagliptin (Tradjenta)

Side Effects

Like all medications, Glyxambi may cause side effects.  The most common side effects of Glyxambi are mild, but severe side effects are also possible.  

The most common but usually mild side effects of Glyxambi include:

• Urinary tract infections
• Common cold symptoms (runny nose, stuffy nose, or sore throat)
• Upper respiratory tract infection

Serious side effects can rarely occur with Glyxambi, including:

• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
• Heart failure (heart pumps blood poorly)
• Ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood and urine)
• Severe infections of the urinary tract and genitals
• Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
• Dehydration
• Allergic reaction

Interactions

Some potentially harmful drug interactions can happen with Glyxambi. A few examples include:

• Insulin or other medicines that lower blood sugar
• Diuretics (water pills)
• Rifampin

Storage

Store Glyxambi at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C).
