Uses
Multaq is a prescription medication used in people with a history of abnormal heart rhythms. It can be prescribed for people who used to have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter but now have a normal heart rhythm. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart problems.
In people with a heart arrhythmia, the cells that set the “pace” of heartbeats are not firing correctly. They might fire at incorrect times, or some heart chambers fire out of sync with the other heart chambers. Arrhythmias, if not treated, can lead to cardiac arrest and serious blood clots. Once an abnormal heart rhythm is corrected, Multaq can be used to maintain the normal rhythm.
Multaq works by blocking electrical signals that move through the heart tissue. Blocking these signals helps to maintain a normal heart rhythm.
Dosage
The usual dose of Multaq is 400 mg by mouth twice daily. Multaq should be taken with breakfast and dinner.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Multaq may include:
- Abdominal pain
- Allergic dermatitis
- Bradycardia
- Dermatitis
- Diarrhea
- Dyspepsia
- Eczema
- Increased serum creatinine

Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver problems before starting Multaq.
Do not use Multaq if you have class IV heart failure.
Multaq is contraindicated in people with bradycardia (slow heart rate) less than 50 beats per minute. It is also contraindicated in people with a prolonged QTc interval.
Multaq is contraindicated in people with permanent atrial fibrillation because it doubles the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization.
Interactions
Multaq has many drug-drug interactions that change the levels in the blood. It is dangerous to take it with certain drug combinations. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of the medications you are taking, including:

Storage
Multaq should be stored at room temperature (59-86°F, or 15-30°C).
