Alinia (Nitazoxanide) Product Information
Uses
Alinia is an antiprotozoal indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum.
Alinia has not been shown to be effective for the treatment of diarrhea caused by C. parvum in HIV-infected or immunodeficient patients.
Dosage
There are oral tablets and oral solution available:
- 500 mg tablets
- 100 mg/5 mL oral suspension

Precautions

- The Alinia oral suspension container should be kept tightly closed, and the suspension should be shaken well before each administration. The suspension may be stored at room temperature for 7 days, after which any unused portion must be discarded.

There are no data with Alinia in pregnant women to inform a drug-associated risk. Alinia may be used during pregnancy after the first trimester in women with severe symptoms.
An active metabolite of Alinia has been found in breast milk. The decision to breastfeed during therapy should include the risk of exposure to the infant and the benefits of the treatment.
