Prilosec (Omeprazole) Medication Information

Uses

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ulcers. 

Dosage

The capsules are available in several different strengths:

  • 10 mg
  • 20 mg
  • 40 mg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Prilosec include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain

Precautions

Prilosec like other PPIs can increase a patient's risk of developing an infection called C. difficile. 

There is a risk that taking Omeprazole can increase the chance of developing osteoporosis.

Prilosec has been linked to low magnesium in some patients.

  • Methotrexate

Storage

Store at room temperature (59-86ºF). Protect capsules from moisture and store in a tight container.

  • Prilosec should be swallowed whole, it should not be crushed or chewed.
  • Prilosec is typically given for 4-8 weeks.
  • Omeprazole capsule can be opened for those patients that have difficulty swallowing and put on apple sauce.

There have been some concerns about taking Prilosec, and other PPIs for extended periods of time. There is a risk of infection, osteoporosis, dementia, and cancer. 

 

It is better to take Prilosec in the morning?

It is typically recommended to take Prilosec in the morning. 

 

How quickly does Prilosec work?

It can take several days for Prilosec to start work to reduce the acid in your stomach. 

 

Can I take Prilosec after eating?

Omeprazole can be taken with or without food, but it is typically preferred to be taken before eating.

 

Does Prilosec make you gain weight?

Omeprazole is not really associated with weight gain.
