Uses

Symbicort is a prescription inhaler used to treat asthma in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Symbicort is also prescribed to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.  

With asthma, the lungs’ airways become inflamed and narrow. Asthma usually starts during childhood, and symptoms may come and go over time. Symptoms include chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing.

Specific triggers, such as cold air or exercise, can suddenly worsen asthma symptoms. This is known as an asthma attack. People with asthma should always carry a rescue inhaler in case of an asthma attack. Symbicort is not a rescue inhaler. 

COPD is usually caused by long-term exposure to harmful chemicals, such as cigarette smoke. This exposure leads to permanent inflammation of the lungs, which leads to a decrease in airflow. This makes it difficult to breathe. COPD symptoms are similar to asthma symptoms and may include fatigue and excess phlegm. 

Symbicort contains two medications in one inhalation aerosol: budesonide and formoterol fumarate. Budesonide is a steroid that helps reduce inflammation in the lungs. Dosage

Symbicort is a metered-dose inhaler that comes in two strengths: 80/4.5 and 160/4.5.

The usual dosage of Symbicort inhaler is two puffs twice daily. The strength that your doctor prescribes will depend on your age and the severity of your asthma or COPD.

Precautions

Symbicort may not be safe for people with the following medical conditions:

• Heart conditions or high blood pressure
• Seizures
• Thyroid problems
• Diabetes
• Osteoporosis
• Eye problems like glaucoma or cataracts
• Weakened immune system
• Pregnant or plan to become pregnant 

Side Effects

Symbicort may cause some unwanted side effects. Most side effects with Symbicort are mild and go away as the body adjusts to the inhaled medication.

• Headache
• Upset stomach
• Change in voice

• Muscle spasms or stiffness
• Vision problems

Interactions

Symbicort may interact with other drugs or over-the-counter products. Some examples of medications that could interact with Symbicort include:

• Beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, atenolol, or propranolol
• Certain diuretics
• Clarithromycin
• Ketoconazole 
• Ritonavir 

Before and during treatment with Symbicort, tell your doctor about all of your other medications. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and dietary supplements.  

Storage

Store Symbicort at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) with the mouthpiece pointed down. Symbicort canister contents are under pressure and should not be punctured or exposed to extreme heat or open flame.
