Soolantra (Ivermectin) Dosage and Side Effects

Soolantra (Ivermectin) is a topical medication prescribed to patients with rosacea. This medication helps to help reduce the redness, pimples and swelling associated with rosacea.  

Rosacea is a skin condition causing redness and blood vessels to show on the face. It may also produce acne-like bumps, which are small, red and pus-filled. Often times, these symptoms will flare up for a period of time and then go away. Soolantra (Ivermectin) helps to diminish the symptoms and signs associated with rosacea.  

The condition is more likely to occur in middle-aged women with fair skin but can affect anyone. There is no cure for rosacea, but a proper diagnosis from your doctor and treatment with medications like Soolantra (Ivermectin) has been shown to help control the symptoms. In addition to Soolantra (Ivermectin), you may be advised to stay away from or moderate the following: 

  • Certain cosmetics 
  • Sunlight and wind 
  • Alcohol 
  • Extreme temperatures 
  • Hot beverages and spicy foods 
  • Some medications that dilate blood vessels 
  • Exercise 
  • Emotions 

Proper Use

This prescription medication is for topical use only and should only be applied to the affected areas on the face. The cream should be spread across the skin in a thin layer. Do not forget to wash your hands before application and then after to remove the medicine from your hands.  

Avoid putting this Soolantra (Ivermectin) around certain areas of your face, such as the inside of your nose, in your eyes or on your lips. Wash with cool water if you accidentally get this medication in such areas.  

You must use this medication regularly to see results and it may not be immediate. It may take a few to several weeks to see this medication’s effects.  Do not use more medication than as directed. It will not help your symptoms clear faster. In some cases, overuse of this medication will worsen symptoms.  

Side Effects of Soolantra

In some patients, skin irritation may occur, but it is rare. If you experience redness or burning that is persistent, contact your doctor or pharmacist.  

If you experience unusual effects after using this medication, contact your doctor. If you experience any of the signs of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of allergic reaction include:  

  • Itching or swelling of the face or areas around the face 
  • Severe dizziness 
  • Rash 
  • Difficulty breathing 

Warnings and Precautions

If you have an allergy to Soolantra (Ivermectin) or any of the inactive ingredients in this medication, tell your doctor before taking this medication. Tell them about all of your allergies.  

Do not use this medication if you are pregnant unless it is needed. Discuss the implications of using this drug while pregnant. Soolantra (Ivermectin) also passing through the breast milk and it is unknown as to the effects this medication will have on the child when it is passed on through breast milk. Talk to your doctor about your options to treat your symptoms if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
