What is Augmentin used for?
Augmentin is an antibiotic medicine, and is only available by prescription. It can be used to cure a range of bacterial infections. Augmentin has both amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (also called clavulanate or clavulanic acid). It is in a group of medicines called aminopenicillins.
Amoxicillin stops bacteria from creating cell walls and so they die, but sometimes is still resisted by some bacteria; these bacteria produce enzymes called beta-lactamases. Beta- lactamases break the beta-lactam ring and this causes amoxicillin and related antibiotics to be less effective.
The other powerful ingredient in this medicine is clavulanate and it is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It binds to bacterial beta-lactamase and stops the enzymes from breaking down the amoxicillin molecule.
While clavulanate has no power to kill bacteria, it helps to stop amoxicillin from being disintegrated by bacteria that are known to resist it. Therefore clavulanate augments or boosts the activity of Amoxicillin.
