Asmanex Twisthaler is a medication that is prescribed to patients who have asthma. It won't help with an active asthma attack, but when used regularly it will reduce the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma, and also prevent the attacks from happening.

By using Asmanex Twisthaler which is a corticosteroid, the inflammation in the airways is reduced. It will only help prevent inflammation and cannot be used to treat an acute asthma attack once it has taken place. Therefore, it is important to have a rescue inhaler on hand.

This medication should not be used when an asthma attack has started , it is important that you take it regularly for prevention. The recommended dosage is 220 mcg or 400 mcg taken once daily in the evening. It has been noted that asthma is controlled better when the inhaler is used the evening time compared to a morning dose.

If you have previously taken high doses of inhaled corticosteroids then 220 mcg taken twice daily can provide more favourable asthma control.  Asthma therapy should be reviewed by your doctor as they will assess if the dosage needs to adjusted.

After using the inhaler, you should rinse out your mouth with water.  There is a risk of a yeast infection if you do not rinse your mouth following each inhalation. You may have to use the medication for up to 2 weeks before there is a sign of improvement but do not stop taking the medication. Speak to the doctor and ask their advice.

Follow these steps for use:

1. Remove the Twisthaler from the foil pouch
2. Open the inhaler by removing the cap. You will need to hold the base and twist the cap counterclockwise to remove. Once the cap is removed the inhaler is loaded for use.
3. Breath out fully then bring the inhaler to your mouth and and place your lips around the mouthpiece. Take in a fast and deep breath to receive the dose.
4. Close the inhaler by replacing the cap.

Please note that when the dose counter reads "01" - this means that only 1 dose remains in the device. Be sure to ensure you have enough supply on hand so you don't miss a dose.

Side Effects

Asmanex side effects can include:

• Fever, coughs or chills
• Aches and pains
• Headache
• Tenderness around the cheeks and eyes
• Ear congestion
• Tight chest
• Feeling if always being tired and weak
• Breathing problems and a tight chest

If the side effects stop after a day or two it could be that the body was just adjusting to the medication. If they last for longer, then see the doctor.

Precautions

If you have taken this inhaler before and had a problem with it, you should tell the doctor. You should also let them know if you are allergic to either milk proteins or mometasone. You also need to inform the doctor if you have ever suffered from:

• Glaucoma
• Cataracts
• Tuberculosis
• Any type of infection
• Family history of osteoporosis
