What is Arimidex used for?

As women get older, they will eventually go through the menopause.

At this stage, Arimidex can be given to bring down the estrogen levels in your body making  it less likely that breast tumors will form. It can also be used if you have already been diagnosed with breast cancer or if other medication has not worked.

Usually the other treatment medication for this condition is tamoxifen, a medication that is meant solely for women, so men and children should not use it.

Can I take this if I am pregnant?

It is not known if anastrozole is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the tumorigenicity shown for anastrozole in animal studies, or the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

How quickly does Arimidex lower estrogen?

The recommended daily dose, Arimidex 1 mg, reduced estradiol by approximately 70% within 24 hours and by approximately 80% after 14 days of daily dosing. Suppression of serum estradiol was maintained for up to 6 days after cessation of daily dosing with Arimidex 1 mg.
