Spiriva HandiHaler (Tiotropium Bromide) Medication Information

Uses

Spiriva HandiHaler is a prescription inhaled medication to prevent and reduce the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) in adults.

COPD is caused by long-term exposure to harmful chemicals or gases, such as cigarette smoking. This exposure leads to permanent inflammation of the lungs. This inflammation causes changes in the lungs, which leads to a decrease in airflow. This makes it difficult to breathe.

Spiriva HandiHaler is not a “rescue” inhaler and shouldn’t be used to treat sudden COPD flare-ups. A flare-up is a period of time that COPD symptoms get worse.  COPD symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and mucus.

Spiriva HandiHaler works by opening up the lungs’ airways, making it easier to breathe.  Spiriva HandiHaler can help prevent COPD flare-ups and make them less severe when they do occur.

Dosage

Spiriva HandiHaler is available in one strength: 18 mcg per inhaled capsule.

Spiriva HandiHaler capsules contain powder.  The capsule gets punctured by the inhaler device, and you’ll inhale the powder contents of the capsule.  Spiriva HandiHaler is for oral inhalation only.  Do not swallow Spiriva capsules.

The usual dosage of Spiriva HandiHaler is 2 inhalations once daily.  Be sure to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly.

Precautions

Spiriva HandiHaler may not be safe for people with the following medical history or conditions:

  • History of an allergic reaction to Spiriva (tiotropium) or Atrovent (ipratropium)
  • Kidney problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Enlarged prostate or trouble passing urine
  • Pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Severe allergy to milk proteins

Side Effects

Spiriva HandiHaler may cause side effects in some people.  The most common side effects of Spiriva HandiHaler are mild, but severe side effects are also possible.

The most common but usually mild side effects of Spiriva HandiHaler include:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (common cold symptoms)
  • Dry mouth
  • Sinus irritation
  • Sore throat
  • Chest pain
  • Urinary tract infections
