Optimmune Ointment (Cyclosporine) Dosage and Side Effects

Cyclosporine ophthalmic (Optimmune) is indicated for the treatment of keratonconjnctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis in dogs. KCS (aka dry eye syndrome) is usually a lifetime required treatment.

Proper Use of this medication

Cyclosporine Ophthalmic should be used according to your veterinarian’s instructions. Prior to applying the ointment, if a discharge is present, clean with a sterile eyewash solution recommended by your veterinarian.

Please note that the ointment may temporarily blur your dog’s vision; please watch your pet to avoid any injury from bumping into objects.

Side Effects

Side effects from Cyclosporine Ophthalmic are rare due to the low dose concentration of cyclosporine. Most common side effects of Cyclosporine Ophthalmic include:

  • Eye irritation (redness, rubbing at the eye, excessive blinking)

Please contact your veterinarian if the side effects persist or worsen within a week of treatment.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use in dogs that are allergic to Cyclosporine. Do not use in dogs that have either a viral or fungal eye infection.

The safe use of cyclosporine ophthalmic (Optimmune) has not been determined in puppies, breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.

Interactions with this medication

When using Cyclosporine Ophthalmic, please inform your veterinarian of any other medications your pet is currently taking, including supplements, as interaction could occur.

If applying other eye medications please wait at least five minutes before applying cyclosporine ophthalmic (Optimmune).
