What is Januvia?
Januvia (Sitagliptin) is a prescription medication that is taken daily to help patients with Type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. The medication works best when your blood sugar level is high by supporting your body’s natural ability to lower blood sugar levels.
Brand name and generic Januvia medication is not effective at helping to normalize low blood sugar levels.
While the aim is to lower you blood sugar level, it is also important to ensure that the levels do not get too low, which is referred to as hypoglycemia. Januvia (Sitagliptin) alone is not likely to cause hypoglycemia because it does not work well when blood sugar levels are low. If you take other medications to lower your blood sugar level, you are at higher risk of getting a blood sugar level that is too low.
If you have been prescribed Januvia (Sitagliptin), or a generic Januvia, you may save money by ordering from our online Canadian pharmacy.
We offer the same quality of Januvia as top pharmacies in the US for less the cost. We also offer a Januvia coupon, if it is your first time ordering from us. This will bring the Januvia cost down to an affordable level you'll love.

Januvia (Sitagliptin) Medication Information
Uses
Your healthcare provider may prescribe Januvia to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. The generic name for Januvia is sitagliptin. It cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes.
People with type 2 diabetes cannot make enough insulin to meet their needs, so blood sugar is too high. When blood sugar is high for long periods, it causes damage to different organs. The damage can be prevented and sometimes reversed with proper treatment.
Januvia works by shutting off the protein dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). DPP-4 is responsible for breaking down incretin hormones. Therefore, Januvia increase incretin hormones, which causes the pancreas to produce more insulin and the liver to slow glucose production.
Januvia helps to restore a normal balance of insulin to blood sugar when taken every day.
Dosage
The starting dose is 100 mg by mouth once daily.
The dose may be lowered for some people based on their kidney function. It can be reduced to 50 mg by mouth once daily or 25 mg by mouth once daily.
Side Effects
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Nasopharyngitis
- Headache
Precautions
Some people have experienced pancreatitis after starting Januvia. Use caution if you have a history of pancreatitis.
Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart failure.
Use caution if you have a history of kidney or liver problems. The dose may need to be reduced in some instances.
Severe joint pain is a severe but rare side effect of Januvia. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained pain in your joints.
Tell your doctor if you have ever experience the skin condition Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Interactions
Drug interactions are rare with Januvia. The most common interactions involve other antidiabetic medications like:
- Insulin
- Sulfonylureas
It is common to take more than one medication for diabetes. Your doctor should closely monitor when you are making changes to your diabetes regimen.
Storage
Store Januvia at 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Pharmacist Tips
- Januvia works best when taken every day. If you miss a dose, you can take it as soon as you remember, but not if it’s longer than 12 hours since the last dose. In this case, skip the dose and take your next scheduled dose.
- Januvia works best when combined with diet and lifestyle modifications. Speak with your doctor about exercise and nutrition programs that would be best for you.
- Become familiar with symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) while you are taking Januvia. Common symptoms include sweating, tremor, and headache.
