Effient (Prasugrel) Medication Information

Uses

Effient is a platelet inhibitor that is used to reduce a patient's risk of clotting cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in patients who have undergone a PCI. 

Dosage

The tablet is available in several different strengths:

  • 5 mg
  • 10 mg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Effient include:

  • Bleeding 
  • Headache 
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Precautions

There is an increased risk of bleeding in patients taking Effient.

There is an increased risk of clotting event like heart attack or stroke in patients who stop taking Prasugrel. 

There is a risk of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in patients taking Prasugrel. 

Interactions

A common drug interaction with Effient includes:

  • Warfarin
  • NSAIDs
  • Heparin
  • Digoxin
  • PPIs
  • H2RAs

Storage

Store at room temperature (59-86 ºF). Keep in the original container.

Typically you will take Prasugrel for 12 months following a stent, but talk with your doctor before stopping Effient. 

 

Can you stop taking Effient?

It is not recommended to stop taking Prasugrel without your doctors permission because of the increased risk of clotting events following a stent. 

 

Is Effient a blood thinner?

Effient is not technically a blood thinner, it is a platelet inhibitor. Effient will prevent platelets from aggregating and can make it easier for you to bleed.

 

What are the side effects of Effient?

The most common side effect with Effient is bleeding, both major and non-major.
