Axid (Nizatidine) Product Information

Axid is prescription medication given to those who suffer from excess stomach acid. It is a H-2 receptor blocker that  can be used to treat heartburn or GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux) , a condition that causes excessive burping, burning in your chest or throat, and a sour taste in your mouth.

How is Axid dosage taken?

Your doctor will tell you how you should take Axid and there will also be clear advice printed on the leaflet provided. This should be followed and dosage not changed or length of use altered.

When taking the medication, also drink a full glass of water. It should be taken less than an hour before you are going to eat or drink something that may trigger heartburn.

If symptoms worsen or are still present after 2 weeks, contact the doctor.

Side Effects

There might not be any side effects felt, but if there are you need to know if medical attention is required. Emergency help will be required if you suffer from:

  • Hives
  • Breathing problems
  • Swollen face, throat or tongue

Other symptoms will require you to stop using Axid and get in touch with a doctor. They are:

  • Heartburn that is getting worse
  • Pains in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling light-headed
  • Jaundice

Precautions

Your doctor needs to know if you are allergic to Axid or other medication for heartburn such as Zantac or Pepcid. Heartburn and heart attacks are similar when it comes to the symptoms so if you have certain symptoms get medical health. They include:

  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Pain in the shoulder or arm
  • Sweating
  • General malaise

Other side effects that doctors need to know about before you start taking Axid:

  • Pain when eating
  • Stools that contain blood
  • Coughing up blood
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Heartburn that has lasted for more than 12 weeks.
  • Kidney or liver disease in the past
