Anandron (Nilutamide)

Anandron is a prescription medication that your doctor may prescribe for you if you have prostate issues.

Prostate cancer can be detected, but there are still times when it spreads and the cancer moves to other parts of the body. Removal of the testicles is one treatment, but Anandron is often prescribed when stage D2 is reached, and will be given with LHRH agonists.

This medication help blocks the effects of androgens. The active ingredient is known as Nilutamide.

Directions

It is hard to say what the dosage will be as it will be different everyone, so your doctor will decide what dosage is suitable for you,considering things such as other medication, severity of the condition, and how well you respond to treatment.

Anandron is a tablet that should be taken orally and has to be taken once every day, but there is the choice to take it with or without food. It is important that it is taken at the same time every day.

If other medication is also prescribed, you may start taking Anandron before the others but this will be to hold back the surge of testosterone that will be caused after taking the LHRH agonist.

Side Effects

Not all men will suffer from side effects, but some will and they are likely to be:

• Increase in breast tissue – gynecomastia
• Pain in the breasts
• Discharge from the nipples
• Loss of erection – sometimes one will be achieved but not maintained
• Sight issues – seeing in the dark will become harder
• Nausea
• Weakness
• Constipation
• Difficulty in getting to sleep

Most of the time, any of the side effects that are suffered will not last for too long and will certainly stop when treatment finishes.

Precautions

Anandron can be taken with certain other medications; however, there are some that it must not be mixed with.

Before starting to take the tablets, you should let your doctor know about all of the tablets you are already taking even if they are not prescription medication, including herbal products, and you should continue taking the medication until told to stop.

You should also tell your doctor if:

• You have a problem with your liver
• You have breathing difficulties
• You have trouble passing stools – medication can be provided to help this
• You are becoming dehydrated. It is important that plenty of liquid is taken.

Although Anandron is usually prescribed to men, it can be taken by women as well; so, it is important that your doctor is made aware if you are female and pregnant.
