What is Agrylin used for?

Agrylin is a medicine for treating thrombocythemia. Also known as thrombocytosis, thrombocythemia is a blood cell disorder that develops when there are excess platelet cells in the blood. Agrylin is an oral capsule containing 0.5mg of anagrelide. Platelets are formed from the megakaryocyte cell.

When Agrylin is taken, anagrelide stops the maturation stage of the megakaryocyte cell’s development. It does so by blocking the activity of the phospholipase A2 enzyme, which is needed for finishing the megakaryocyte maturation process.

Directions

Prior to taking Agrylin, your doctor will recommend the best dosage based on different factors. Regardless, your initial dose of Agrylin will be 0.5mg and you will take it four times daily. A higher dose initially will be 1 mg two times a day.

If the first dose is well tolerated, it will be necessary to reduce and maintain your platelet count at 600,000/μL. If possible, your level should between 150,000/μL and 400,000/μL. So to attain this level, you need to increase your intake by 0.5mg only per day in any given week.

No matter what, try to check your platelet count every week. Additionally, follow your doctor’s Agrylin dosing instructions fully. If you suffer from moderate hepatic impairment, the starting dose will still be 0.5mg per day. If there is need to increase the first dosage, your doctor should tell you after checking your heart, liver and kidney function for a while via blood tests. Don’t increase your dose without your doctor’s instruction.

In addition, try to take all your doses and if you forget, take the skipped dose as soon as you can remember. If you are about to take your next scheduled dose, don’t take the missed one.  In case you need to do surgery, tell your surgeon that you are taking Agrylin so they can advise you accordingly. Never stop taking this medicine abruptly as this could worsen the condition you are trying to treat.
