Actoplus Met (Pioglitazone/Metformin) Product Information

Actoplus Met is prescribed to patient's with type 2 diabetes. It is a combination medication containing Pioglitazone and Metformin, together they help manage blood glucose levels.

What is Actoplus Met used for?

Made up of a combination of metformin and pioglitazone, Actoplus Met is used to help control the sugar levels in blood. Providing there are other actions taken, including a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise, it can help control type 2 diabetes. It is meant for patients who are not injecting insulin daily, and unfortunately, it is not able to treat anyone with type 1 diabetes.

Actoplus Met Dosage

Actoplus Met has to be taken with food as there could be side effects as a result of the metformin. When there is also pioglitazone in the tablet, it is suggested that there is a twice daily dose of 15 mg/500 mg or once a day of 15 mg/850 mg.

Your doctor may decide to change the dose that they start you on, if they believe other issues are making this necessary, and most of the time it will start low and then the dosage will rise until it is at its most effective. It should be taken at the same time every day.

If it is being used in place of a different diabetes medication, make sure you contact your doctor with regards to stopping the old one and starting Actoplus Met.

Side Effects

As with all medication, there is a risk, but not a certainty that you will suffer from side effects. If you do suffer any they could include:

  • Problems with your teeth
  • Myalgia
  • Make heart failure worse
  • Blood in the urine and a painful bladder
  • A need to urinate a lot and pain when it happens
  • Pain in the lower back

Precautions

  • Heart failure
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Cancer of the bladder
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Metabolic acidosis

Once taking the medicine, there are times when it may be best for you to stop for a while. This can be when you need to undergo a medical procedure where there has to be a dye placed in the veins. This will normally be a CT scan or x-ray. Don’t just stop taking it, but make sure your health care provider knows.

You need to tell your doctor about your medical history and if you have ever had:

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • A heart condition of any kind including heart attack
  • Fluid retention
  • Stroke
  • Bladder cancer

If you are more than 80 years of age, it is possible that you will be told not to take it. You should also be given the information that there is a chance that its use could be linked to bladder cancer. Your doctor will discuss with you as to whether or not the need to take it outweighs the risk.
